In 2013, Audemars Piguet reimagined its beloved Royal Oak Offshore with a black ceramic case. One year later, the luxury watch brand debuted an all-white version: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver White Ceramic. ( Audemars Piguet reference number : 15707CB.OO.A010CA.01).
The case is 42 mm in diameter. Case material is white ceramic, with a white rubber bracelet. The bracelet is closed with a titanium buckle, completing a solid and sporty look for a luxury sports watch that is designed to perform.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver White Ceramic 15707CB.OO.A010CA.01 is water resistant to 300 m, a depth more than sufficient for dedicated divers. The screw-locked crown ensures waterproofness, the ceramic bezel is virtually unscratchable, and the glareproof sapphire glass crystal keeps the watch legible. Whether you're exploring a coral reef or kicking back on your day off, you'll be able to see the bold white dial in any light. Hour markers are baguette indices and the hands are applied with lume.
The internal rotating bezel and mega-tapisserie dial are both silver-toned, adding an element of depth and contrast. The slight silvering on the dial and inner bezel is echoed in the deeper silver colours of the outer bezel screws, the titanium strap links, the pushers and the buckle: everything else is bright, beautiful, white.
Adding to the solid appearance of the watch are the long, angular crown guards, which project almost from the lug position to the hexagonal protector of the locking crown. Even the caseback looks (and is) tough: a titanium plate is screwed onto the white, 1850-Vickers ceramic case, while the self-winding in-house calibre 3120 is revealed behind a sapphire viewing window. Calibre 3120 is one of the world's foremost automatic movements, and is a thing of beauty to behold. The bi-directional rotor is 22K gold, and is delicately engraved not just with the AP logo but with the coats-of-arms of both families: Audemars and Piguet.
The hacking automatic calibre displays time and date, and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It has 40 jewels, and a very respectable 60-hour reserve. The date window is at 3 'o' clock on the watch's dial.
The all-white design is the selling-point of this powerful luxury watch, for more reasons than simple modernity. If the thrill of owning a futuristic white ceramic version of Audemars Piguet's legendary sportster wasn't enough for you already, then surely seeing the Gerald Genta-designed bezel in such stark relief would tip the scales! By creating a version of the Royal Oak that's as white as a stormtrooper's helmet, Audemars Piguet have revealed every line, curve and bevel of their famous watch, and the result is a near-perfect interplay of smooth surfaces and stark shadows.
I reckon Gerald Genta would have approved of this reincarnation of his design classic. On the wrist, it's an arresting luxury watch that is guaranteed to turn the heads of everyone in the room.
